Overview
Super
leaders is a middle and high school-based youth leadership and drug
prevention program for at-risk but talented students. Founded in 1985 by
former Redskin Brig Owens, Esq., Super Leaders is based on the
traditional values of honesty and respect with a focus on positive peer
leadership, group support and self-empowerment.
The Super Leaders program identifies and trains a team of students in
selected schools to resist the negative pressures of their homes,
schools and neighborhood environments. Super Leaders develops these
students to be positive role models and peer leaders in the effort to
prevent substance abuse, violence, teen pregnancy, AIDS, academic
failure and other problems effecting their peers and younger children.
Super Leaders combines intensive year-round training with positive
activities to occupy students’ free time. There is constant contact with
a caring support group comprised of peers and adult role models. This
group has a genuine commitment to goals of youth empowerment, individual
responsibility, group solidarity and staying in school.
The
major components of Super Leaders Programs are:
• Mentoring
• Training Retreats
• After-School Leadership Programs
• Super Leaders Community Services Corporation
• Principal Fitness (President’s Council on Physical
Fitness & Education)
