Areas Addressed and Populations Served

We are currently in seven metropolitan Washington DC area high schools- 4 in the District, 1 in Ann Arundel County, 1 in Prince George’s County, 1 in Montgomery County and expect to acquire 1 in Northern Virginia (to be announced). Each year at least 300-500 students are enrolled as full-time Super Leaders. However, many more students benefit since the entire student-body of each Super Leaders school is exposed to the program concept and philosophy through school-wide assemblies, rap sessions, discussions, fundraisers and exchange programs with other area schools. When the middle and elementary school students are exposed, the program impacts more than 5,000 young people each year.

Our target population is a multicultural blend, expressing the program concept and philosophy.

Accomplishments

We continue to measure our accomplishments via survey results' and the following criteria:

  • No Drug Use - All Super leader students sign a contract pledging not to use drugs. Over 23,000 students have graduated from this program over the last 22 years. All but two innocent drive-by victims have completed the program and none has required substance abuse treatment.
  • Motivated Students – Most of our students excel in academics, athletics and career development; attendance dramatically improves; they stay in school; and they graduate! Seventy-five percent go on to college, or enter the military, and the remaining group finds meaningful employment.
  • Peer Interaction - Our students are role models and influence other students to act and communicate in a more positive and constructive manner.
  • Elevated Personal Goals - Self-esteem and self-confidence are apparent.
  • Learning the Meaning of Lont-Term Commitment- Our students are instilling the importance of community involvement and improving the quality of life for themselves and others.

The high school graduation rate for Super leaders students is over 95 percent. Our graduates have received degrees from a variety of colleges and universities throughout the United States including:

In addition, our accomplishments continue to be acknowledged throughout the community we serve. As an example, the Anacostia High School Super Leaders received an honor certificate for their Youth Non-Violence Initiative program from the Washington Wizards professional basketball franchise. Also, Super Leaders were recently cited by the National 4-H Conference Center as being one of the most disciplined groups to participate in programs while utilizing their facilities. The Super leaders program continues to grow and improve the quality of life for its students, their families and communities now and in the future. Super Leaders is nationally recognized as one of the few programs that works twelve months of the year with its students. Through retreats, peer counseling and mentoring, employment assistance, internships, visits to colleges and universities, summer outdoor events and other group-wide activities, Super Leaders students receive constant reinforcement in their quest for excellence.
